Are you thinking about retiring in Savannah, Georgia? Well, I’m going to give you my top seven reasons why you should definitely consider Savannah.
Hi there, welcome to my blog! My name is Karin Carr and I’m a REALTOR® with Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners here in Savannah, GA.
If you are thinking about retiring to Savannah you really should bookmark this website because I talk about all things Savannah related and I know you don’t want to miss anything.
If you are considering retiring to Savannah, GA here is my top seven reasons why Savannah should definitely be on the list of places to consider.
#1 – we have an international airport. Now this may not seem like that big of a deal but trust me when you want to go to your cousin’s wedding or you want to go visit your children or your grandchildren you
do not want to be driving all the way to Atlanta to catch a flight.
Atlanta is a good four-hour drive from here so the fact that we have the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport right outside of Savannah (actually it’s in Pooler, where my office is) is wonderful to have.
#2- we have the city and the beach. You can go to downtown Savannah and we have tons of things to do. There is nightlife, there are tours, there is shopping, there is dining out, and there are all the things you would expect to find in a city. But yet 20 minutes away on Tybee Island we have the beach.
Tybee Island is probably only about 10 miles off the coast of Savannah so it’s a very short drive, but you’re
right there at the beach. You can leave all your stuff on the sand go grab some lunch, you can go to the wildlife museum, you can go into the t-shirt shops and buy a boogie board… it’s a typical beach community. And then be right back downtown half an hour later when you’re done at the end of the day.
#3 – and one of my personal favorites is eating out. There are so many killer restaurants in Savannah I could probably eat out for dinner every single night for an entire year and never hit the same restaurant twice.
Paula Deen – we all know Paula Deen is a Savannah native – has several restaurants here. There are tons of seafood restaurants as I’m sure you can imagine. I mean we’ve got the Georgia white shrimp and oysters and crabs that are all native to this area. So if you like seafood you’re definitely gonna get hooked up with seafood if you live in the Savannah area. But then there are other places as well – typical steak places, Southern food, and lots of new ethnic restaurants are opening up on a regular basis in Savannah.
#4 – road trips. So when you retire somewhere now you’ve got lots of free time and maybe you don’t want to just sit in your house all day. You want to go explore places.
Savannah is wonderful because there are plenty of other cities that are just a few hours’ drives away. Orlando takes about 4 to 5 hours to get to, Jacksonville Florida only two hours away. Charleston is two hours away. You can go to Myrtle Beach, you can go to all types of different places and it’s not a really
far drive. Like I said before Atlanta is about four to five hours depending on traffic and you can go see other places without having to fly there.
#5 – and this could be a very big one for you – is hospitals. We’ve got lots of major hospitals in Savannah. There is St. Joseph’s Candler, Memorial, St. Joe’s, the VA Medical Center, plus lots of smaller individual hospitals, imaging centers, the whole nine yards. So there is no shortage of health care in the Savannah area and let’s face it – as we get older we need access to good health care.
#6 is the cost of living. I think that Savannah is a very affordable place to live compared to other major cities. Now Savannah’s not a big city, it’s a small city. The population of Savannah itself is about a hundred thousand and the whole tri-county area together is maybe three hundred thousand. So it’s not a huge city.
It’s nothing compared to Atlanta but to me, that’s a benefit because we get the airport, we get the nightlife, we get the dining, we get the stuff to do without the traffic of living in a major city, without the expense of living in a major city. Our median home price is less than $250,000 for the entire area and that means it’s an affordable place to retire. Especially if you’re coming from up north.
I have many clients who are moving here from New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Indiana… they’re able to sell their house and buy a property here with the cash proceeds from the sale of their house up north simply because of the difference in the property prices.
And #7 of my reasons why you should be retiring to Savannah Georgia is – your family will want to come to visit you!
Yes, that is right. Savannah is a huge tourist destination and people love to come here on vacation because of all of the things that I just mentioned. The beach, the nightlife, the things to do, the dining out, all the things.
So if you live in a wonderful tropical destination your kids and grandkids are probably gonna want to
come visit more frequently.
Now depending on your family hopefully that’s a bonus and not a drawback! Just sayin’.
So I hope I have convinced you why Savannah is a pretty awesome place to live. If you need more information about the various areas of Savannah I have a free relocation guide for you.
Just click this link and you can download that free relocation guide. It’s a PDF and you can keep it on your computer, on your iPad, or you can print it out if you prefer. It’s got some interactive maps and lots of really great information for letting you get to know the Savannah area, so you can decide whether or not this is a place where you’d like to retire.
Don’t just take my word for it – my mom and dad retired here, which is how I ended up here in the first place!
