Here are 6 facts you may not know about Hilton Head Island:

1. Although the island is small in terms of landmass and size, it has the largest bicycle trails with almost 60 miles all over the island. Riding bicycles is a great way to explore the area.

2. The entire island is in the shape of a human foot. So most locals and residents refer to certain areas of the island as the ankle, toe, or heel of the island. So, whenever you hear someone wanting to go to the heel of the island, you’d know what they mean.

3. The island is one with nature and its development is purposely done so to develop natural resources in the area. So you won’t see any blinking neon lights or flashy signages anywhere on the island. It’s all toned down and in harmony with nature.

4. There used to be two dozen “plantations” that grew Sea Island Cotton on the island before the Civil War. So, nowadays, you can still hear people use the term “plantations” but they now refer to the large resort communities that still use the term.

5. Hilton Head, SC doesn’t have many local residents with a population of fewer than 40,000 people, but they have around 2.5 million tourists all year.

6. There’s the red and white striped lighthouse in Harbour Town that’s never really functional. It was supposed to be a gift shop and tourist attraction but it never really created traction. Most people call it “Fraser’s Folly” but later on, it became a signature icon of the island.

7. Gullah culture is abundant in Hilton Head being one of the Sea Islands were freedmen of the Sea Islands developed and grew their own culture. It’s visible in the island’s development until today.
